The FIRST of 3 estimates on third quarter GDP growth was issued today- the value of the production of goods and services in the United States-adjusted for price changes-increased at an annual rate of 3.5 percent in the third quarter of 2014, according to the “advance estimate” released by the BEA. In the 2nd quarter, real GDP increased 4.6 percent. The Bureau emphasized that the third quarter advance estimate released today is based on source data which is incomplete or subject to further revision. There will be a total of 2 more revisions after this advance estimate, number 2 will be released on November 25, 2014. Do you feel it?

Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas:

Texas factory activity increased again in October according to business executives responding to the Texas manufacturing Outlook Survey. The production index fell from 17.6 to 13.7 indicating output grew but at a slower pace than in September. The New Orders index rose, reaching a six month high. The Capacity Utilization Index edged down and the Shipments Index also slipped. Perceptions of broader business conditions remained optimistic in October as outlooks improved markedly.”

On Tuesday the US Census Bureau released its advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders for September 2014:

  • New orders for manufactured durable goods in September decreased 1.3 percent.
  • Shipments of manufactured durable goods in September, up three of the last four months, increased 0.1 percent.
  • Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up seventeen of the last eighteen months, increased 0.3 percent.
  • Inventories of manufactured durable goods in September, up seventeen of the last eighteen months, increased 0.4 percent.

US raw steel production

… edged higher by 0.7 percent as mills operated at an average capability utilization rate (ACUR) of 76.3 percent. In the corresponding week last year mills operated at an ACUR of 76.5 percent. On the year mills have operated at an ACUR of 77.1 percent compared to an ACUR of 77.0 percent in the same period last year.
