Deterioration in business conditions reported by results of The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond May 2023 Fifth District Survey of Manufacturing Activity, according to executives responding to the survey. The composite manufacturing index fell from -10 in April to -15 in May. Two of its three component indexes-shipments and new orders-declined.
US Raw Steel Production Up from Previous Week
In the week ending May 20, 2023, US raw steel production was 1,728,000 net tons at an ACUR of 76.8 percent, up 0.2 percent from the previous week ending May 13, 2023.
US Drill Rigs Running Down from Previous Week
There were 720 drill rigs running in the US last week, down 11 from the previous week, now down 8 rigs from last year. Canadian driller shut 9 rigs to 85, down nine rigs from the previous week, down 3 rigs from one year ago.
Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Increased in the First Quarter
Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the first quarter, according to the “second” of three estimates for first quarter growth. This was revised up from the “advance” or first estimate, by 0.2 percent, primarily reflecting an upward revision in inventory investment.

Last week we lost Jimmy Brown, #32 for the Cleveland Browns. I was fortunate to watch him play at Cleveland Municipal Stadium back in the day. My dad used to take my sisters and I to Hiram College to watch the Browns practicing. It was a thrill to watch that man carry a football. The LA Dodgers’ front office has decided to honor a group called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the team’s “annual pride night.”

On Wednesday we lost Tina Turner of the duo, Ike & Tina Turner. Tina was eighty-three and died peacefully at her home in Switzerland. As a solo performer she rocked it in her concerts. RIP
The freak, Sam Brinton, the cross-dressing luggage thief (busted three times), is being held in a jail in Maryland while awaiting extradition charges that will send him to Virginia for stealing an African fashion designer’s suitcase.
